Forget it! Android Wear 2.0 can't save smartwatch

What is the future of smart watches? This is not yet clear. Many people think that Android Wear 2.0 will become Apple Watch’s biggest competitor, but it cannot change the status quo.

Compared to the previous version, Android Wear 2.0 does make progress, but it is not enough. There are some problems with both types of watches. Catch up instead of inventing

Over the years, Google has been developing Wear 2.0, and even postponed the release in 2016 to fix bugs. It's been a while since time passed. What does Wear 2.0 allow users to pay for, rather than choose a competitor's product?

Not much. The biggest advancement may be the navigation system. Previously, if you wanted to navigate through menus and apps, you could only swipe your finger. After the new system is released, the experience will change. We use Google Assistant voice commands to control, or use the finger swipe, but it is more intuitive and easier to use. Android Pay is also a bonus item. According to reports, due to its ability to connect to 4G networks, watches can play streaming music.

These improvements are just to help Wear catch up with Apple and Samsung, not beyond. Apple Watch already owns Apple Pay. Apple products have always been easy to use.

Wear 2.0 currently has only two smart watches, all made by LG. One is Watch Style, and the other is Watch Sport. Watch Style removes features such as speaker functionality, Android Pay, and GPS. Watch Sport does have these features, but it's too big, too bulky, and it's weird whether it looks or feels.

In short, such a watch cannot be used on any occasion, and you must carry a mobile device with you. The Wear smartwatch launched this year may be able to change the status quo, but the current watch can not be done, they have problems. Even if smart watches are improved, it is hard to believe that Android can catch up with competitors.

Skip Android to see the market

Compared with competitors, Android has fallen behind in the smart watch market. The lack of revolutionary features in Wear 2.0 may not change the situation. However, because Android is lagging behind, even if it struggles harder, it will not bring much change to the ordinary smart watch market.

Distinguishing smartwatches from mobile devices is the biggest challenge for smartwatches. When smart watches were first introduced, many people had speculated that it would replace mobile devices. Now it seems that smart watches obviously can't quickly exceed mobile devices. Therefore, smart watches must find a niche market in which to surpass mobile devices, allow them to be accepted by users in these markets, and then allow the public to accept them.

When it comes to smart watches over mobile phones, fitness is a good example, but there is a fact that limits the performance of watches: Many people do not exercise at all, they can also use cheaper heart rate trackers. Despite this, there are other market segments that can cut in, such as making the watch a center of control for the Internet of Things, or becoming an easy-to-use information tool. However, to achieve the goal, smart watch technology must be more advanced, including having a better APP and more content.

Looking for market

Compared with a few months ago, smart watches are now in a better position, but are still far from people's expectations.

In the third quarter of 2016, sales of smart watches plummeted. Although sales increased in the fourth quarter of 2016, they accounted for only a small percentage of total mobile device sales. Although Android Wear 2.0 has progressed compared to previous versions, it is not enough to reverse the situation.

Note that it is not that the fate of smart watches is destined to be the same as Segway and other inventions.

The smart watch has its own place of survival. Although its success is limited, it proves that the wearable device has its own use. Technology companies must continue to develop and prove that it can compete with mobile devices and seize some key market segments for the general public to accept.
