Punchkeyboard is a virtual reality open source keyboard from Baidu VR

Independent VR developer Jonathan Ravasz has developed a virtual reality keyboard that provides a visual input interface for virtual reality heads, supporting devices such as Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, and may be compatible with PlayStation VR in the future.

Punchkeyboard is a virtual reality open source keyboard that incorporates automatic completion and association functions so that you can quickly type text. The application's built-in Lenovo is based on the Reddit dialogue, but the repository contains the ability to create custom dictionaries for personalized suggestions.

The developer of the app, Jonathan Ravasz, said: "After testing various social VR platforms, I found the same problem on each platform. These VR experiences often rely on real-world physical keyboard input. For various reasons This may be a daunting task, lacking the visual feedback of keyboards and keycaps, and static, fixed physical projects that limit the room-scale VR experience. These difficulties prompted me to start researching the new standard for VR keyboard input."

Punchkeyboard uses a reduced QWERTY layout (similar to the layout of traditional touchscreen keyboard input) to save space. In desktop VR, most use 6-DOF controllers to interact. Although these controllers can achieve quite accurate palm/hand tracking, they do not have the same precision in finger tracking. This restriction causes the user to type text only with a single "finger", similar to the two thumb inputs on the touch screen. Lenovo and Complementary words appear as text bubbles above the keyboard. The user can easily speed up his/her typing speed by selecting these bubbles. The virtual keycap will bend slightly around the user, making the controller easier to reach. To avoid double-click conflicts, each row of keys is slightly adjusted in the vertical direction.

If you want to have a taste of your VR system right away, you can download the file directly from GitHub. Jonathan Ravasz plans to provide this VR keyboard on the Unity Asset Store, hoping it can be an integral part of the various VR experiences.
