Molex recently introduced the EXTreme OrthoPowerTM quadrature direct-power connector system designed to direct power to backplane line cards in network and telecom applications. The new EXTreme OrthoPower system uses a dedicated power card to provide 30.0A in-and-out-routing power for each line card and 60.0A total power per module via split-blade technology.

RichBenson, Molex's new product development manager, said: "Because the market demands higher system speeds and cost-effective solutions, direct power is becoming more and more important. OEM designers face the challenge of space and board routing constraints. In particular, how best to power the line card. As the first-time direct-power quadrature-configured connector , the Molex EXTreme OrthoPower system saves money by eliminating the need for power routing of separate quadrature backplane connectors. EXTremeOrthoPower connectors feature proven power contacts and a robust steering system for proper mechanical alignment during patching. The EXTremeOrthoPower connection system features a rugged quadrature type housing based on Molex's other proven power connectors including the EXTremeLPHPowerTM and EXTremeTen60PowerTM connection systems.

Benson added: "By reducing the number of components used for power routing, direct power quadrature architecture has the advantage of cost reduction, while also addressing OEM design challenges for larger power products that require a compact package."
