Philips announces prototype of a new generation of LED bulbs expected to be mass-produced in 2015

On April 11, Philips released a prototype of a new generation of LED bulbs, which is said to be energy-saving and environmentally friendly. It is expected to launch a mass production in 2015 and replace half of the daylight bulbs in the market within 10 years.

Philips said that the prototype of the new generation of LED bulbs can reach 200 lm per watt after technical breakthrough, so it can definitely attract market demand after listing. According to Mark Hand, a technical expert at peer Acuity Brands, 200 lm per watt is equivalent to twice the luminosity of the best fluorescent lamps on the market.

Philips last year's lighting revenue of 8.4 billion euros (about 11 billion US dollars), sitting in the global lighting market worth 70 billion euros. Although the outside world originally believed that LED bulbs will soon replace the current mainstream daylight bulbs, Philips' time schedule published on the 11th is still beyond industry expectations.

In recent years, LED bulbs launched by major manufacturers such as Philips, Siemens and Cree have successfully entered the home lighting market, replacing most fluorescent lamps and halogen bulbs. However, due to the high price of LED bulbs, there has been limited growth in commercial lighting markets such as offices and factories.

Although Cree also offers LED bulbs with up to 200 lumens per watt, its luminosity varies from environment to environment. Rene Van Schooten, Philips Lighting, said that Philips' current product development will be the first luminosity and color stable LED bulb on the market.

In April last year, the US Department of Energy predicted that the LED bulbs developed by the lighting industry at the beginning of 2015 would reach 160 lumens per watt at most. Therefore, if the Philips R&D plan progresses smoothly, it will further reduce the global energy consumption.

At present, in the United States alone, fluorescent lamps consume about 200 terawatts of electricity per year. If Philips' new generation of LED bulbs replaces half of the fluorescent lamps in 10 years, it will save $12 billion in electricity bills annually and reduce carbon emissions by 60 million metric tons.

Van Shunden said that although the price of the new generation of LED bulbs will still be higher than that of the daylight bulbs, if the electricity bills in 2015 and the energy saving performance of the LED bulbs are taken into consideration, then the cost of using the LED bulbs within one year will be used. Will be lower than the fluorescent light.

LED street lamp refers to the street lamp made with LED light source, which has the unique advantages of high efficiency, safety, energy saving, environmental protection, long life, fast response speed, high color rendering index, and is of great significance to urban lighting energy saving.
