TSMC recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for the LED lighting technology R&D center and mass production plant.
Zhang Zhongmou, chairman of the board of directors, said at the ceremony that when TSMC announced that it would enter the green energy industry such as LED and solar energy a year ago, the outside world was not optimistic. However, in the early days of TSMC's development of the epitaxial film foundry business more than 20 years ago, the outside world also had the same doubts. Afterwards, it proved that the profit of the epitaxial film foundry was quite good. Therefore, now TSMC is launching a new business such as LED, which is optimistic about the future with a very high profit. It will have a great profit contribution to TSMC, and it will definitely not be the only small profit that the outside world imagines.
It is reported that the investment in the first phase of the plant facilities and production equipment is NT$5.5 billion. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2010 and mass production will begin in Q1 2011.
