Flying robot design highlights

It sounds like the movie "Issue Impossible", but these are actually the requirements of this year's International Aero Robotics Competition (InternationalAerialRoboticsCompetition; IARC). In fact, these tasks are almost impossible to complete.

“We won the championship last year because only our robots can get in and out of the building smoothly, but our robots have not completed the task of searching for mobile disks,” said Johnathan Bendes, a computer science student at the University of Michigan, who led one of the teams. The International Air Robot Competition sponsored by the International Association of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (AUVSI) has been around for 18 years, but this year's competition is only the sixth, as the competition will continue until the robots complete the mission. This year's competition is particularly meaningful. The US Federal Aviation Administration recently certified two UAVs to fly in the United States - Boeing's InsituScanEagle and AeroVironment's Puma. The competition uses a helicopter-like robot to fly into a building to remove a mobile disk (instead of a CD), and the correlation with these events is unquestionable.

In order to correspond to the 27 teams in Asia and the Americas, the competition was built in the same way in Grand Forks, North Dakota, USA, and Beijing, China. Among them, 21 teams have participated in the competition last year. Several teams successfully flew into the building within ten minutes to find the mobile disk and landed back, and one of the teams also had the best static design.

The University of Michigan team began building its quadrotor helicopter robot from the ground up with two video recorders, two ranging radars, and a MEMS inertial measurement unit. Also comes with an Intel Atom processor, onboard computer, wireless communication and a standard Linux notebook. The video recorder's signal stream is streamed to the notebook, and a graphical recognition algorithm can be executed to identify the object, establish a map of the interior of the building, and find the fastest exit route. The Atom processor handles all real-time decision making and navigation tasks. The ARM Cortex-A8 (on the GunsixOvero board) manages sensor and height control, while AtmelXmega handles onboard data communication, power management and safe shutdown.

Last year, the University of Michigan team used a fixed-length tether suspension magnet to pick up the moving disk, but the robot flew too close to the metal chair and the magnet was sucked. This year, the team switched to a retractable tether that allowed the robot to lower the height pick after finding the mobile disk.
