UMC will end its dismantling subsidiary UMCJ in Japan's chip manufacturing business

According to Taiwan media reports, due to the poor production environment in Japan, UMC recently announced that it will end its chip manufacturing business in Japan, disbanding and liquidating 100% of its subsidiary UMCJ.

UMC acquired a partial shareholding in Nippon Steel Semiconductor in 1998 and was responsible for its operation. In 2001, Nippon Steel Semiconductor was renamed UMCJ. In 2009, UMC publicly acquired all of UMCJ's outstanding shares and changed UMCJ into a 100%-owned subsidiary.

However, due to the reduced demand from Japanese customers and the unstable energy supply after the 2011 earthquake in Japan, the production environment was not good. UMCJ's operating production was not enough, and the operating performance failed to meet the expected target. As of June 30 this year, UMCJ's total assets were 16.849 billion yen and liabilities were 2.774 billion yen; in the first half of 2012, revenue was 3.698 billion yen and net loss was 1.593 billion yen.

UMC said that after the dissolution of UMCJ, the manufacturing bases in Taiwan and Singapore will supply local Japanese customer demand in the future.
