Agilent Power Meter Instructions

What is the power meter?

A power meter is a meter that measures the active power of an electrical signal. Power is an important parameter that characterizes electrical signal characteristics. In the DC and low frequency range, it is convenient to measure the voltage effective value V on the load, the current effective value I flowing through the load, and the phase angle between the voltage and the current, and calculate the power value by the following formula.

Power meter composition

The power meter consists of a power sensor and a power indicator. A power sensor, also called a power meter probe, converts a high-frequency electrical signal into energy that can be directly detected. Power indicators include signal amplification, transformation, and display. The display directly displays the power value. A cable connection between the power sensor and the power indicator. In order to adapt to the needs of different frequencies, different power levels and different transmission line structures, one power meter should be equipped with several power meter probes with different functions.

Unit of measure for the power meter

Power is defined as the work done in a unit of time. The basic unit is watt (W), 1W is equal to 1 joule of work in 1 second. Commonly used power units are MW (1MW = 10^6W), kW (1KW = 10^3W), milliwatts (1mW = 10-3W), microwatts (1μW = 10-6W), and piva (1Pw = 10-12W).

Another commonly used power unit is expressed in decibel milliwatts (dBm). It takes 1 milliwatt as the reference level P0=1mW, and the actual power value P(mW) is compared with P0 and takes the logarithm. This is the absolute unit of power.

Decibel (dBW) can also be used as the power unit, in which case P0=1W, ie 1 dBW=30 dBm.

Power meter function

1. Used to measure absolute optical power or relative loss of optical power through a length of optical fiber. In fiber optic systems, measuring optical power is the most basic, much like a multimeter in electronics. In fiber optic measurement, the optical power meter is a heavy duty common meter.

2. By measuring the absolute power of the transmitter or optical network, an optical power meter can evaluate the performance of the optical equipment. Using an optical power meter in combination with a stable source, it is possible to measure connection loss, verify continuity, and help evaluate fiber link transmission quality.

3. The dB function with direct insertion loss measurement.

Agilent power meter usage

Agilent power meters vary in their methods of use, and the small series lists the use of a handheld optical power meter.

The handheld optical power meter is easy to use with Agilent and does not require warm-up and is ready to use. When used with Autotest-compatible light sources, it automatically recognizes wavelengths, allowing you to measure 1310nm and 1550nm wavelengths simultaneously with the push of a button. The power meter also has an acoustic signal that identifies the fiber; an RS232 port that connects to a PC or laptop to use loss-testing software for remote control, data logging or integration, and reporting and printing.

N3970A Optical Power Meter Quick Reference Guide

1. Remove the interchangeable connector, shake the middle of the interface, and unplug the adapter.

2. Disable automatic power off. Press and hold the POWER button for 3 seconds until ON and perm are displayed.

3. If you need to access the hidden keyboard, pull up the display cover.

4. Select the POWER button, Source button: Enter the setting reference, press Abs/Rel and then press Set Ref3 seconds (3 beeps will be generated). Pressing Hold will stop/start displaying the change in value on the screen. If the test is successful during the test, the meter will display HZ.

5, automatic operation: When there is no user action, you need to adjust the instrument to automatic detection mode, press Autotest for a few seconds, you can also lock the instrument in automatic detection. At this time, only one wavelength is displayed, and the wavelength can be adjusted by pressing the / / + of the power meter.

6. Manual operation: Turn on the instrument and select the wavelength, press POWER, Power Meter, -/+, if you want to display the linear mode, press dBm/w. If you need to check the maximum and minimum values, press max/min repeatedly. You need to reset the maximum and minimum values. Press max/min to hear 3 beeps.

7, data storage: first enter the Power Meter or Autotest mode. In automatic mode, it is possible to operate on STORE. If you clean all saved data and press RECALL and CANCEL for 3 seconds at the same time, clr will be displayed to complete the cleaning. If you need to change the storage location, press SELECT -/+ to set it. To view the record, press RECALL -/+ to exit the stored data and press CANCEL.

8. Additional automatic storage operation: When you need to view or delete the saved data, first exit the automatic test mode and enter the Power Meter mode.
