World Supercomputer Master Taihu’s Light on Artificial Intelligence Has Been Concerned

Twenty final teams from all over the world participated in a week-long fierce competition. The Tsinghua University team performed well and won the championship and e Prize calculation challenge.

ASC17 is the world's largest supercomputing competition. It has received a total of 230 universities and colleges from around the world. After the preliminaries, 20 teams have been selected to qualify for the finals of the National Supercomputing Wuxi Center this week. The final required the participating college students to design their own super-computing system under 3000 watt power constraints, run cutting-edge scientific and engineering applications such as optimization of internationally accepted benchmarks, artificial intelligence traffic prediction, genetic assembly, and materials science, and fully adopt the Chinese core design. The world’s fastest supercomputer completes high-resolution ocean numerical simulations on the Shenwei Taihu Light.

The team of Tsinghua University who won the championship carried out an in-depth parallel optimization of the high-resolution ocean numerical simulation model MASNUM in the light of Taihu Lake. The original program was successfully extended to more than ten thousand nuclear and the operating speed was increased by 392 times, and thus obtained e Prize calculation challenge. MASNUM was nominated in 2016 as the top prize for the international supercomputer application "Gordon Bell".

The team of the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, who won the runner-up, performed well in the highly-reviewed artificial intelligence game. The team designed an excellent deep neural network model and built a supercomputer to conduct large-scale training on historical traffic big data provided by Baidu. The traffic condition of the morning peak road is predicted and the accuracy ranks first in all teams.

The Weifang Academy team who was shortlisted for the ASC finals for the first time used Inspur Supercomputers to build advanced heterogeneous acceleration systems that were highly optimized. The internationally accepted HPL benchmarks were run, creating 31.7 trillion floating-point operations per second. The new world record has become the biggest dark horse in the competition and won the highest computing performance award.

In addition, the Russian Federal University of Ural, Tsinghua University in Taiwan, Northwestern Polytechnical University, and Shanghai Jiaotong University won the Applied Innovation Award. The National University of St. Petersburg, Russia, and Zhengzhou University shared the Best Popularity Award.

Jack Dongarra, chairman of the ASC Competition Experts Committee, the top 500 supercomputer ranking leader in the world, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the University of Tennessee professor Jack Dongarra, said in an interview, “You can see teams from all over the world. Participating in the competition is really great, this event has greatly inspired students to learn advanced science, and it's amazing to be able to compete in the light of Tai Lake. Imagine a laptop in 100,000 people's gym for on-line computing. Taihu Light's computing power is equivalent to 100 such gymnasiums, which is an unreplicable experience for each participating team."
