Research Results The research team used a natural chitosan, chemiluminescent reagent N-(4-aminobutyl)-N-ethylisoluminol (ABEI) and a catalyst Co2+ to prepare a hydrogel. The study found that 99.8% of Co2+ was immobilized on the hydrogel backbone, while 89.5% ABEI was dispersed in the hydrogel pores. When the oxidant H2O2 is added, it slowly diffuses into the hydrogel, which is decomposed by the catalyst Co2+ at the active center to produce active radicals, which are then reacted with a chemiluminescent reagent to produce chemiluminescence. The chelation and heterogeneous action of Co2+ enhances its catalytic activity and stability, and the hydrogel with micro/nano pores and high viscosity greatly reduces the diffusion rate of H2O2, resulting in strong and long chemiluminescence. This work simulates firefly bioluminescence in terms of chemiluminescence kinetics and catalytic properties, and its luminescence time is significantly better than existing long-term chemiluminescence systems, such as enzyme-involved chemiluminescence systems and peroxy oxalate chemiluminescence systems.
